UPS has announced further support for driver safety training in southern Africa, with a new donation to the Road Safety Fund.

Eduardo Martinez, President of UPS Foundation, and Moisses Huntt, UPS Vice President responsible for global safety, joined Fleet Forum director Paul Janssen at the Decade of Action Policy & Donor Forum in New York to announce a new $150,000 donation for a project training truck drivers in road safety in South Africa and neighbouring countries. This brings total funding for the project in 2012, via donations to the Road Safety Fund, to $300,000.

The UPS funding is supporting an initiative led by Fleet Forum and North Star Alliance to provide driver safety training modules for truck drivers and humanitarian fleets, combining the expertise of Fleet Forum in designing fleet management programmes for humanitarian NGO fleets, and North Star Alliance’s network of ‘Wellness Centres’ established to tackle HIV/AIDS awareness and other health issues with long distance drivers of heavy goods vehicles. The increased funding in 2012 will allow the initiative to accelerate its pilot phase.
